Catesby Tunnel Aerodynamic Testing Facility

Diamond Fine Milling

Key Objectives

  • To precision fine-mill the out of tolerance new concrete road

This work originally looked straight forward, the newly laid concrete had failed both longitudinal and horizontal alignment and also required a roughened finish to accept an asphalt overlay. Fine milling using our new W210Fi fitted with diamond cutting tools and equipped with our Leica total station levelling was the solution offered to Stepnell Ltd. A trial was carried out in our yard to ensure the Leica total station was working correctly with information supplied by Stepnell’s engineers and a date was set to start the work.

There were issues with the laser levelling system which reacted differently in the tunnel depending on the air conditions present but this was overcome and the new surface was handed over to Tarmac to carry out the bituminous surfacing work.
