Power Plane continues work on Heathrows southern runway.
Runway resurfacing is an essential maintenance task that comes round roughly once every decade. During 2013, we will be removing the worn out asphalt prior to resurfacing the southern runway and during 2014 we will be repeating the exercise on the northern runway.
Because Heathrow is so busy, this work needs to take place at night and we started work at the end of March removing 80 meters of full width runway per night from Sunday to Thursday night with approximately 400 tonnes per shift being removed by two specialist planing machines a Wirtgen W250 and a Wirgen W210. These machines are both installed with self recovery equipment to allow for removal from critical areas in the unlikely event of a total failure on both engines.
